Acupuncture

Did you know?
Acupuncture points are standardized by the World Health Organization (WHO)

Acupuncture is part of a broad-based approach to overall health that can help you along the path toward optimal health and vitality - physically and emotionally. This ancient and effective form of healing can reduce swelling, improve range of motion, strengthen your body, speed recovery time and address any underlying problems that could contribute to a future injury.

This technique of inserting filiform needles into acupuncture points on the body with the aim of restoring well-being may be combined with other therapies - such as herbs - to naturally eliminate pain and reduce inflammation, exercise to increase muscle strength and joint mobility and massage to enhance soft tissue healing. The combination of acupuncture with herbs is sometimes referred to as Chinese Medicine.

Acupuncture is a time-tested, safe, natural and drug-free health care system that can provide immediate relief and long lasting benefits. It can help return your body to peak performance by restoring proper and continuous flow of vital energy, or qi (pronounced chee). Qi is the vital life energy that animates the body and protects it from illness. It flows through pathways called meridians and provides nourishment for all of the body's organs. When there is an imbalance or blockage in the flow of qi, physical symptoms may result.

Just as periodic check-ups can detect tooth decay before it becomes painful and leads to serious problems, regular acupuncture check-ups can help identify, rebalance and correct little problems before they become bigger ones.

There are many factors in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory that may play a key role in the root causes of illnesses and pain, including body constitution, emotional health, excessive work, social and exercise activities, improper diet, physical trauma and pregnancy. Diagnosis can be made according to specific symptoms, times of occurrence, location on the body, type of pain, triggers and remedies which provide relief.

Acupuncture "has a calming, restorative effect that increases a sense of well-being and ultimately helps the body to accept the creation of life," said acupuncturist Ifeoma Okoronkwo, MD, a professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine. Studies show a clear link between acupuncture and the body's natural "feel good" brain chemicals. To learn more, please contact our Acupuncture Physicians.
